The discipline of Artificial Intelligence (AI) takes root in its origins as an approach emerged from
research on systematic method for problem solving (Horvitz et al, 1988). Today, advanced computer
technologies have unleashed AI to deliver interactive access to data, enable manipulation of data,
and give users the ability to conduct appropriate analyses. By analysing historical and current data
(symbolic and numerical), situations, and performances users get valuable insights that enable them
to make more informed decisions “or better actions” (Sharda et al, 2015).
The application of AI technology into the field of medicine has been related to the development of
AI programs in order to support healthcare practitioners in their day-to-day duties, e.g. diagnosing,
documenting clinical procedures, generating problem lists for physicians at the point of care, pulling
out critical information to undertake therapeutic actions, etc. The fact remains, however, that
conception of medical AI is reflected in two mainstreams, that is, Virtual and physical. The virtual
part ranges from applications such as EHR systems to neural network-based guidance in treatment
decisions. The physical part deals with robots assisting in performing surgeries, intelligent prostheses
for handicapped people, and elderly care (Malik et al, 2019). While each stream of research has its
uniqueness with regard to potential contributions to patient care, the virtual dimension of medical
AI is promising to be pursued as the ethical complexities of physical AI applications require further
reflection and of course proof of their medical utility (Bostrom and Yudkowsky, 2014).
