One of the major mechanisms that leads to the viciousness of WW 2, total war as they called it with absolutely no one and nothing exempt from the violence, is the creation of in-group/out-group identities. The Nazi ideology of race is the most obvious example of the phenomenon, and that leads to the horrors we see in Night.

But the same in-group/out-group dynamic exists in other frameworks as well—the “casual” anti-Semitism that we see in The Sun Also Rises, for instance, and the assumption of European-American superiority in A Soldier’s Play.
Is forming groups in that way necessary to war-fighting?
