Description
Intro: Culture is an essential component of the human geography of a realm or region. While language, ethnicity, religion, and history all contribute to a culture, the more tangible, accessible aspects of a culture are usually its arts and cuisine. It is these two cultural dimensions that we tend to most fully experience and appreciate when we visit realms and regions other than our own. We cannot truly understand the regions of this course without engaging these two cultural aspects. Assignment: You are tasked with meeting the World Cultures General Education special subject area requirement that this course satisfies, by writing an essay (500 words maximum) on either the arts or the cuisine of a certain region. When you select your region, indicate whether you will write on its arts or cuisine. If you are writing on arts, you will have the option of writing on a piece of literature (e.g., poetry, novel, religious text), performing arts (e.g., music, dance, theater), visual arts (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, cinema), or architecture that you feel is representative of your region. If you are writing on a cuisine, choose a representative dish/meal (with its ingredients and their sources). Rubric by which your TA will evaluate your essay: Cultural presentation (25 points) Art/cuisine is authentic and representative of your region (5 points) Art/cuisine is described clearly and with sufficient detail (5 points) Art/cuisine is accompanied by a timeline, map, and pictures that put the piece in its historical and geographical context (5 points) Explanation for why the art/cuisine is important and significant to your region (5 points) Writing style: Essay structure, grammar, spelling, and citations (5 points) Entire assignment: 25 points
