Comprehensive Classroom Management Plan
Comprehensive Collaborative Classroom Management Project
Students will develop a comprehensive, collaborative classroom management plan for 3rd grade utilizing Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) strategies as outlined in the text. Due to the pandemic, students are unable to participate in service learning projects. For this assignment, you will build out your classroom management plan as if you were going to begin teaching tomorrow. Planning and preparation is key to a successful classroom, so I want students to start thinking about their future classrooms now. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of schools and other agencies. PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and students from underrepresented groups (PBIS, 2018).
Tier 1 Support- Primary Prevention
Tier 1 supports of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) consists of rules, routines, and physical arrangements that are developed and taught by school staff to prevent initial occurrences of behavior the school would like to target for change. For example, a school team may determine that disrespect for self, others, and property is a set of behaviors they would like to target for change. They may choose the positive reframing of that behavior and make that one of their behavioral expectations. Respect Yourself, Others, and Property would be one of their behavioral expectations. Research indicates that 3-5 behavioral expectations that are positively stated, easy to remember, and significant to the climate are best. At the end of the year, a researcher should be able to walk into the school and ask ten random students to name the behavioral expectations and 80% or better of the students should be able to tell the researcher what they are and give examples of what they look like in action (PBIS, 2018).
Tier 2 Supports- Secondary Level Prevention
Positive behavior intervention and support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the fit or link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining Tier 1 (universal for ALL students), Tier 2 (targeted
group support for SOME students), and Tier 3 (individual support for a FEW students) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children and youth by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional (PBIS, 2018).
Tier 3 Supports- Individual Support
Tier 3 support involves a process of functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and a support plan comprised of individualized, assessment-based intervention strategies, including a wide range of options such as: (1) guidance or instruction for the student to use new skills as a replacement for problem behaviors, (2) some rearrangement of the antecedent environment so that problems can be prevented and desirable behaviors can be encouraged, and (3) procedures for monitoring, evaluating, and reassessing of the plan as necessary. In some cases, the plan may also include emergency procedures to ensure safety and rapid de-escalation of severe episodes (this is required when the target behavior is dangerous to the student or others), or major ecological changes, such as changes in school placements, in cases where more substantive environmental changes are needed (PBIS, 2018).

Project Guidelines
*When creating this plan, I want you to really think about what you would do if this were your classroom and they were your students.*
First, you will complete a classroom profile (Section 1). Think about your ideal classroom. The profile will include:
classroom grade
number of students
race/ ethnicity
Gender of students
Students with disabilities
Section 2: Tier 1 Supports- Universal
Introduction- Tier 1 research and the need for Tier 1 supports
Creation of classroom rules and organizational chart along with rationale (diagrams can be added here)
Description of three procedures with reminders
Classroom Schedule
Academic Supports if needed
Section 3: Tier 2 Supports- Targeted- Secondary Support
Introduction- Tier 2 research and the need for Tier 2 supports
Develop an intervention and strategies for students who would need Tier 2 supports (use our textbook Chapter 9-12 and outside resources)
Make sure you describe the needs of the students who require targeted interventions
Academic Supports if needed
Section 4: Tier 3 Supports- Tertiary Interventions and Support
Introduction- Tier 3 research and the need for Tier 3 supports
Develop an intervention and strategies for a (1) student who might need Tier 3 supports (use our textbook chapter 9-12 and outside resources)
Make sure you describe the needs of the student who requires tertiary interventions
Academic Supports if needed
Section 5: Conclusion
How has this assignment changed your view of the current educational system?
