Objective: To continue developing critical thinking skills used in the previous essays, particularly drawing inferences and making conclusions; practice breaking a process down into chronological steps and explicating each stage so that readers can understand the process and repeat it themselves.
Description: The goal of all process writing is the same: to teach readers about a process. Cookbooks, computer manuals, sewing books, business books—these are examples of process writing.
There are TWO kinds of process writing: directional and informational. The directional type explains how to do something (i.e. how to get from one place to another, how to prepare for a job interview, etc.) while the informational type explains how something works or happens (i.e. how a computer works, how oil is refined, etc.).
Instructions: Choose ONE of the following options:
Directional Process Essay: Choose ONE social justice issue and ONE form of nonviolent direct action. Then write an essay that explains—step by step—how to use that particular form of nonviolent direct action to address your social justice issue. For example, you could come up with a plan for a boycotting a clothing company for using sweatshops to produce its products or for organizing a walk-out at your local public school to protest unsafe working conditions.
Informational Process Essay: Many sociologists say that there are FOUR stages in the life of any social movement: emergence, coalescence, bureaucratization and decline. Choose ONE social movement—past or present—and write an essay that explains how that social movement has evolved over time. You may trace the evolution of your social movement across ANY number of stages or focus on a single stage instead. For example, your essay could describe the emergence, coalescence, and bureaucratization of the #MeToo Movement or just focus on its emergence.
Criteria:
Present a thesis that states the process (and the resulting outcome) you plan to explain
Describe that process with an organizational pattern that best suits your topic
Provide detailed explanations of the various steps involved in said process
Refer to specific examples/illustrations in the text in order to support your thesis
