Introduction: this should identify what the paper will address and should be the first paragraph of the paper. If you present it as the abstract, you will not get credit for it. If you do not go into sufficient detail about what the paper will address, you will not get full credit for it. | 3
*Group snapshot: | ||
● Define the population. Cite the source of the definition and state why you chose this particular definition. This should identify what population the paper will address. For purposes of this paper, how is this group defined? Who provided the definition? For example, if you are writing about “African-Americans,” how are they defined and who defines them? Cite the source. It should not be from a dictionary as that definition is much too basic and is somewhat reductionistic. If you use a dictionary definition, you will not get any credit for this section. | 4
● Identify 3 strengths of the group, why they are strengths, and how each strength will help them in addressing issues that arise in the pandemic. Each of these strengths must be from the literature. Each of the above should be cited which means that it should be referenced and based on the literature. Failure to cite this implies it is based on your opinion and is thus not based on the literature and will result in no credit for this section. | 6
● Identify 3 challenges the group experiences, why they are challenges, and how these challenges will impact their response and the effects of the pandemic. Each of these challenges must be from the literature. Each of the above should be cited which means that it should be referenced and based on the literature. Failure to cite this implies it is based on your opinion and is thus not based on the literature and will result in no credit for this section. | 6
*Impact of the pandemic:
*Identify two ways in which members of X group have been disproportionately affected on an ECONOMIC level by the pandemic. This section should be specific and cite statistics and/other information to support your point about the economic impact of the pandemic on X group. For example, if the literature says this, you might say that if someone is a member X group, they are more likely to have lost their job than if they are white. This information should come from the literature and be cited appropriately. | 6
For each of the above, identify two actions you can take to address the disproportionate economic impact of the pandemic on members of X group. | 2
For each of the above, identify two policy changes that could be made to address the disproportionate economic impact of the pandemic on members of X group. You may either cite current legislation (that has either been passed or is proposed) or propose new legislation. You should identify whether these policies are at a local, state, or federal level. | 2
*Identify two ways in which members of X group have been disproportionately affected on a HEALTH level by the pandemic. This section should be specific and cite statistics and/other information to support your point about the health impact of the pandemic on X group. For example, if the literature says this, you might say that if someone is a member X group, they are more likely to test positive for COVID or less likely to be tested for COVID. This information should come from the literature and be cited appropriately. | 6
For each of the above, identify two actions you can take to address the disproportionate health impact of the pandemic on members of X group. | 2

*Knowledge needed for positive practice
Identify 3 pieces of information the literature says SW need to have in working with people who are members of X group. Along with each of these pieces of information, you are also to discuss: | 6
● Why each is important in assisting members of X group affected by the pandemic. | 3
● How acquiring this knowledge will improve your practice with members of X group. | 3
● 1 action step you will take to obtain each of the knowledge pieces described above.
This section refers to things you need to know, pieces of information you need, for affirmative practice with members of your group. Things you identify in this section are to be based on what the literature says you need to know. You are to talk about the specific potential impact of the knowledge when you discuss its potential impact on your practice. Making vague statements such as “Obtaining this knowledge will enable me to provide better services to them” will result in no credit for this subsection. Instead, you are to be specific. For example: “In working with Latinx, it is important to be knowledgeable about the different types of immigration status and the implications of each. Knowledge about this will enable me to make appropriate referrals since some agencies may not serve undocumented individuals. I will learn more about the different statuses by reading information on reputable websites such as the US Citizenship and Immigration Services and the League of United Latin American Citizens.” If this information is not based on what the literature says (rather that what you believe you need to know), you will not get credit for it. Therefore, you must cite what you identify that you need to know. If they are not cited, I will assume they are based on opinion and you get no credit for this section. |

*Skills needed for positive practice
Identify 3 skills the literature says SW need to have in working with people who are members of X group. Along with each of these pieces of information, you are also to discuss: | 6
● Why each is important in assisting members of X group affected by the pandemic. | 3
● How acquiring each skill will improve your practice with members of this group. | 3
● 1 action step you will take to develop each of the skills described above.
Skills are behaviors and actions you would take in your work with clients. Feelings are not skills. You must be VERY SPECIFIC in this section and discuss the skills/actions/behaviors you need for supportive practice with the group you are discussing. These skills are to be based on what the literature says and should be cited. If they are not cited, I assume they are based on opinion and you get no credit for this section. When you address how each skill will improve your practice with clients, you are to be specific. Again, vague statements such as “Using the language my clients use will help me provide better services to them” is not acceptable and will not receive credit for it. In addressing the action steps you will take, you must again be specific about what you will do to develop and acquire the skills you need. Vague comments will not earn credit. |

Institutional or structural forces that oppress
Identify 3 institutional or structural forces that oppress members of X group. This may include laws, policies, and/or institutional/agency practices and policies. You should be specific in what you indicate is oppressive.
Examples include the current immigration policies, the criminalization of drugs such as crack and marijuana, policies regarding internal (not external) investigations when people are shot by the police, and other policies such as these. In your discussion of these policies, you must discuss the application of the policy to the population you are discussing in this paper. For example, if you talk about policies that support internal police investigations re: police shootings, you must state that unarmed Black men are more likely to be shot by police officers than unarmed white men (if this is true) and that this is thus a policy that disproportionately affects black men. If it is not clear how the policy is oppressive to members of the group you are doing your paper on, you will not earn credit for your reference to the particular policy. |
6 | |
● 1 way in which each of the above oppresses members X group. You are to give specific examples of how the policy is oppressive to the group you are doing your paper on. | 3
● 1 action step you will take to change each of the institutional or structural forces you have described above. You to state specific action steps you will take to address the oppressive policy you have referred to. | 5
