Have you ever seen a fifteen-sided die? I know I haven’t. But you can roll one virtually in a spreadsheet. Actually, you can pick as many sides as you want using the randbetween command. Entering “=randbetween(1,15)” will generate a randomly selected number between 1 and 15, which of course is exactly the same thing as rolling a 15-sided die. In the tech template for this lesson (see online resources), we’ve set up a die-rolling experiment. You can enter the number of sides you want, then copy down the formula in cell B2 as many times as you want. Each represents a single roll of the die. You decide on a number of trials, then compute empirical probabilities for each outcome. Finally, double the number of trials and repeat, comparing the second result to the theoretical probability of each number.

In this problem, you’re going to compute the probability of winning a variety of different games of chance, using Excel. In each case, you need to decide whether to use the =PERM command or the =COMBIN command, then use that command to find the number of possible outcomes. You’ll then compute the probability of winning in another column. A template to help you get started can be found in the online resources for this lesson, along with descriptions of the outcomes you’ll be counting.

Probabilities of Winning in Racing
The probability of an event is as follows.
P(of an event) = (number of favorable outcomes)/(number of total outcomes)
Given 10 horses in a race.
P(winning) = 1/10 (there is only one way a horse can come in first)
P(place) = 1/10 + 1/10 = 2/10 = 1/5 (horse must finish first or second)
P(show) = 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 = 3/10 (horse must finish first or second or third)
P(Exacta) = 1/(10*9) = 1/90 (horses must finish first and second, in that order)
P(Trifecta) = 1/(10*9*8) = 1/720 (horses must finish first and second and third, in that order)
P(Superfecta) = please see above and see if you can figure it out.
