The lead teacher in a preschool classroom of 3-year-olds is an inexperienced preschool teacher and hasn’t implemented structure, routines, and rules in the classroom

Case Scenario

The lead teacher in a preschool classroom of 3-year-olds is an inexperienced preschool teacher and hasn’t implemented structure, routines, and rules in the classroom. In addition, the teacher hasn’t modeled the behavior expected from the children. The physical environment of the classroom isn’t organized in a developmentally appropriate manner.

The children are engaged in center activity, and the teacher abruptly and without warning tells the children center time is over and it’s time for circle time. Most of the children in the room leave the center activity and join the teacher on their carpet squares. Two children, Zachary and Harper, continue working at the centers despite the teacher’s request to sit on their carpet squares. The teacher becomes irritated that the two children continue center activities and takes each child’s hand to lead them to their carpet squares. While walking to their squares, Zachary pushes Harper, and Harper begins to cry loudly. The teacher is angry at both children for disrupting the classroom.

Project Requirements

Write a 5–7-page double-spaced essay using the decision-making model to discuss the case scenario. Include a title page and a reference page with at least three references in APA format (Refer to the Sample APA Title Page and other APA resources on the Early Childhood Learning Resource Center page.) Please use Figure 13.2 in your textbook to write a guidance plan using the case scenario. You’re encouraged to access and review the course resources available on the Early Childhood College Programs and Courses Learning Resource Center for additional guidance on completing this assignment. The following steps should be discussed based on the case scenario:

Observe
Observe the child’s behavior.
Clearly identify the problem.
Whose problem is it? Does the child, the adult, or both own the problem? Focus on solving the problem.
Examine and discuss the context of the problem.
Ask how the child’s age and developmental readiness might affect behavior. Ask how the child’s family, culture, or the classroom environment has contributed to the problem. The purpose isn’t to place blame but to assess the context of the behavior.
Decide
Your observation will give you ideas on what to change. Here are examples.
Choose a guidance strategy. You should recommend only developmentally appropriate guidance strategies, not punishment. You can evaluate the list of guidance strategies in your textbook. Please choose at least four guidance strategies that would be appropriate in this case scenario, and discuss why these strategies are developmentally appropriate.
Change the context. The case scenario indicates that the teacher should change the context of the preschool classroom. In this section, you should discuss how the physical classroom environment can be modified to meet the needs of 3-year-old children developmentally.
Change your own practices. What can the teacher change in this scenario? For example, how can rules, routines, and limits set the stage for success in the classroom?
Take Action
The next part of the guidance plan is to carry out your recommendations for guidance strategies, making contextual changes and changing classroom practices.
Reflect
It’s important to reflect after changes have been made. Because this is a case scenario and you aren’t actually implementing strategies, you’ll need to reflect on what you think would happen if you made actual changes in the classroom based on this case scenario. What do you expect to happen and why? Are there some factors you may need to change? Why?
Grading Criteria

Your project will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Identification of the problem, including who “owns” the problem and why
Discussion of the context of the problem, including multiple factors
Description of at least four guidance strategies appropriate for the scenario
Discussion of the developmental appropriateness of the four guidance strategies
Identification of how the context of the physical environment can be modified
Discussion of how rules, routines, and limits can be established in this scenario
Reflection on what’s likely to occur if all of these strategies are implemented, including a discussion on what further action may be required in this scenario
Correct grammar, punctuation, and format, with at least three references in APA format
