(UNDERGRADUATE) FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY

Fall / Winter 2020-2021

Part 1: The Outline and Annotated Works Cited

The Outline and Annotated Works Cited are due on Monday, November 16, 2020.

1. Choose ONE topic and create a research question that you would like to

pursue:

(THE QUESTION I WANT YOU TLO ANSWER) Describe two different laws in history that changed public perceptions of

children and youth. What was the construction of childhood before and

after the formation of these two particular laws? Why were these

particular laws needed?

2. Find 5 or more scholarly, peer-reviewed resources that relate to your topic

and question (in the form of books, journal articles, chapters in monographs,

etc.). Be creative! You MUST extend your research beyond the Internet. You

will find excellent resources at the Scott Library’s Children’s Studies resource

page: http://researchguides.library.yorku.ca/child?hs=a. Read them and

take notes.

3. Craft a thesis statement that makes an argument about the topic you are

researching.

4. Start thinking through how you would make this argument, with headings

and even sub-headings. This is the beginning of your outline.

On November 16, 2020 you will submit:

* 1 Full Sentence Outline with Subheadings that introduces your research

question and leads to a working thesis statement

* 1 Annotated Works Cited of your 5 texts that summarizes and evaluates

briefly (approximately 2-3 sentences each) your resources, formatted in MLA

style.

To be clear: this first part of the assignment is just an Outline and Annotated

Works Cited

Please make sure that in your Annotated Works Cited, you include the following (all

cited properly, according to the MLA format):

1) At least ONE basic entry: a book by a single author;

2) At least ONE recent peer-reviewed journal article (this can be accessed through

ProQuest or JStor);

3) At least ONE collection of essays, an anthology, or a compilation of essays
