ART 101 Final Contextual Analysis Project
Complete a five to seven page (of text) paper on the work of art by Eugène Delacroix, “Liberty Leading the People.” In this project students will critically apply concepts, vocabulary, content, themes and methodologies relevant to a contextual analysis, as assimilated in class. This final project should reflect the culmination of analysis techniques acquired by the student over the course of the semester.
Your thesis statement should be a response to, or an exploration of, the research question or questions you create. The body of your paper should provide evidence in support of your response to these questions. Be sure to do a detailed visual analysis of your work of art. Visual analysis can often provide clues to the answers/evidence you’re looking for. You should include at least one photo, properly labeled, of your chosen artwork(Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People). You should also include the historical context of your artwork, as this is a contextual analysis it will be necessary to complete the paper. This is a research paper, so no generalizations will be accepted. Be as detailed as possible. Be sure to properly cite your resources.
Word doc with 1″ margins and 12 point Times New Roman. Text should be double-spaced with no additional spaces between paragraphs. First sentence of paragraph should be indented. Use the style of citation you are most familiar with for citations and bibliography, be consistent with what you choose. Your paper should constitute your original ideas/arguments associated with your work of art.
Your paper must include:
An introductory paragraph and thesis. (Page one).
If your thesis addresses two research questions, it is a two-pronged thesis. (If three, then a three-pronged thesis). More than three is not recommended for this assignment. You are only required to have one thesis statement and research question but keep in mind the length of the paper.
A body with paragraphs organized in such a way that they correspond to your thesis statement. For a two-pronged thesis, elaborate on question or prong one first, in two or more paragraphs. (Pages two and three). If three-pronged, then address question two next in two or more paragraphs (pages four and five), and so on.
A concluding paragraph. (Page 6).
Images and bibliography should be at the end of your paper.
Images should be properly labeled.
You may use endnotes, footnotes, or parenthetical to cite quoted or paraphrased references. Footnotes go at the bottom page in text body. Endnotes go all on one page before bibliography.
Endnotes page should be labeled “Notes” or “Endnotes”.
Bibliography page should be labeled “Bibliography” or “References”.
Your project will include a bibliography with at least 3 citations (not including Gardner’s) of current scholarship on your work (books, articles, exhibition catalogues), and a color photograph(s) of your work with full identification label (artist, title, date, media, current location). Bibliography and images will be attached at the end of paper.
