Fine motor dexterity refers to the small muscle movements of the hands, feet, mouth, face, etc. that are necessary to be able to manipulate objects efficiently and can significantly affect a patients ability to function independently when not intact (OTHC, 2019). Fine muscle dexterity impacts how a person writes with a pencil, button a shirt, brushing teeth, opening a door, any small task that recurs a precise movement is fine motor dexterity. While gross motor dexterity is related to movements made by large muscle groups such as walking, jumping, sitting, standing and is related to hand eye coordination (Mauro, 2019).

For the first case study, the patient is a 14 year old diagnosed with ADHD. Studies have reported that children who suffer from ADHD also experience poorer fine motor skills compared with other kids who are typically neuro-developed (Mokobane et., 2019). Children with ADHD often experience academic difficulties and with fine motor skills effecting writing with a pencil, it can definitely impact the child’s performance in the school setting and make school more challenging. This is definitely relevant information to pass on to parents and to help them understand that an ADHD child’s struggles with tasks, like handwriting, are not strictly behavioral, but that fine motor deficits can be preventing the child from excelling at the same pace as their peers.

For the second case study regarding the patient post-concussion, both her fine and gross motor dexterity have been significantly impacted by the concussion. Concussions can be serious traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that can have both minor or severe long lasting effects (THBC, 2018). Our patient is suffering from fine and gross motor impairments, as well as difficulties with balance and coordination that are impacting her ability to function safely and perform her ADLs. There has been a referral to OT placed, which is necessary to help the patient relearn and improve her fine and gross motor skills. It is important to keep in mind that patient’s with concussions experience mood symptoms such as anxiety and depression, that can be worsened by the lack of fine and gross motor abilities. It will be important to help resolve the physical issues, which will help to also improve the depression and anxiety that the patient is also experiencing.
