CJS 222 Criminal Law in the United States Professor Smith Alder
Criminal Defenses Paper & Presentation (150 points possible) Fall 2020
NAME________________________ ASSIGNED TOPIC_____________________________
This assignment consists of two parts:
Research paper (100 points possible):
Each student is required to research and become an expert on her or his assigned aspect of criminal defenses. This requires you to thoroughly research your topic from a variety of sources. To that end, you must find, read, use, and reference each of the following sources in your report:
a law review or law journal article
two court cases from different state appeals courts, federal district courts, or federal appeals courts
a book or chapter from a book (NOT your textbook) or a scholarly article
You may use additional sources, but these four sources are mandatory for a passing grade of D. Additional legitimate sources will improve your grade. However, do not use more than ten sources. Do not use Wikipedia. Do not use your textbook for this class as a source.
After completing your research, report your findings in a well-organized and thorough manner. Your paper should be 6-8 pages (1500-2000 words), typed and double-spaced, using 12-point type and 1” margins, and referenced using MLA, APA or USOC format. Attach a separate sheet with your list of works cited, for a total of 7-9 pages. Do not include a cover page. Do not submit your paper in a folder or plastic cover. Staple your pages together in the top, left-hand corner. Your paper will be graded based on content, organization, grammar and punctuation.
The paper is due on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, in the Drop Box or in class, at 1:30 p.m. Late papers will be penalized five points for each day late.
Group presentation/panel discussion (50 points possible):
Details on the requirements of the presentation will be distributed on November 17. Students will be assigned to groups and will work together that day to prepare for their presentation. Each group will submit a rough draft of its presentation plan on November 17. On November 24, in-class group planning will continue; and each group will submit a detailed, typed outline of its presentation plan and practice its presentation. This plan is worth 10 points. If you are absent on either of the planning days, I will automatically deduct five points from your presentation grade for each day you miss. Presentations will take place on the dates noted on the Class Syllabus.
The presentation itself is worth 40 points. Presentations will be graded based on content, presentation style, originality, and professionalism.
