Biology and environment provide cages for all of us. Write about the three types of “cages” in your life and how you intend to deal with them as you continue to grow and develop.

The narrative is written already, I just would like to have it edited for a better grade ( as I got B) for the revision.
It is based on Maya Angelou’s “Caged bird” poem and must contain the quotations included.
I know the there are quite a lot of punctuation missing. I will be ver grateful for your help, thank you!

THE SONG OF FREEDOM

The caged bird sings for freedom, the caged bird sings for power and opportunities.

All of us experiences the desire to free ourselves from the invisible imaginary cages we feel to be locked in. The personal restriction of freedom can be a result of biological, psychological, environmental and other factors.

I consider the reasons holding me back from experiencing the desired freedom are socioeconomic, psychological and social. One example of personal cage lead by a socioeconomic reason, which in its turn can be defined as a factors referring society related economics factors, is that I cannot go anywhere farther than two miles from our house as I don’t own a car and have to get everywhere by walking. The unavailability of a motor vehicle affects my freedom as I am not able to go to the places to enjoy the nature, food and etc. My mom and I live with an old person , whom she takes care of and not possessing  a car is a great obstacle as we are not able to go to the groceries whenever we want to and instead have to wait for someone to pick us  up or take cab. We are unable to go for a shopping and have more than two hours of the day outside of the house because the above-mentioned old person could get confused. How the caged bird in Maya Angelou’s “Caged Bird” poem stalks down his narrow cage and has “his wings clipped, and his feet tied”( stanza #2:5-6), I find myself in a similar situation floating around the same space and not being able to cross the “mesh”.

Walking is an enjoyable  and beneficial exercise but it becomes a barrier for safety and freedom as there are couple inconveniences and difficulties waiting you outside: New England’s unpredictable weather, drivers staring at you as they drive by, most roads and pathways are not fitted for walking, and dangerous people who could possibly attack or robe you.  Currently I am working towards my goal of obtaining a driver’s license and purchasing a car to guarantee a safer, easier and filled with freedom way of life for us.

You can affect your socioeconomic situation and make it the way you want it to be, but the psychological factors impacting your freedom can be more difficult to handle. We all know the freedom of opinion and expression which are given us since birth and should help us during the challenging life in society. I usually find myself far from accepting that freedom in spite of dreaming to achieve it.

I feel that I am not supposed to tell anyone how I feel deep inside and it prevents me from achieving a personal psychological freedom. Psychological freedom for me identifies a life with less anxiety, a life free from having to prove or justify myself, a life free from the fear of self-ridicule, free from the pressure and shame, free from compulsively protecting the feelings of the people surrounding me. The fear to express my thoughts on a family matter, the fear to tell one side of the conflict that their assumptions, turned into a fact for them, in reality are false and inaccurate, are stuck to my consciousness as both a defense mechanism and weapon.

“It can hurt them”,

“It will take away their trust in me”,

“I am going to get blamed and judged for saying that”. Staying silent, feeling guilty, anxious and concerned for those people have always been the only solution I saw. Anxiety keeps me caged from feeling accepted by the people I spend most of my time with, by the people I love. The anxiety caused by silence slowly increases and impacts my physical health with constant cold sensations and stomachaches; my mental health by keeping me more and more overwhelmed and overthinking. It makes me feel indecisive and commit to things only to cancel at the last minute due to a feeling of being overwhelmed, often creating friction in my relationships. It makes me feel scared of every word I say and every move I make.

Will I be able to get rid of the fear which hinders and interferes the freedom I wish to experience to live a life with less anxiety? I am working towards that. In order to overcome that hiding I must reveal it and open up to let God heal me. According to James (5:15-16) the way we are experiencing healing in our lives is by confessing to another person. Confession is the cure. I understand that, I am feeling the urge to do that, I need that.  As the poem indicates, the caged bird sings of freedom and wants to be heard (stanza #3), I similarly want my “tune to be heard”, I want my song of freedom to echo in people’s minds.

One of the results of constant overthinking over something I have heard or didn’t have the courage to answer turned out into almost eating disorder. I am not allowed to eat so many things that it breaks my heart. Can there be anything more comforting than a delicious meal after a stressing day of school and work? I am not free to eat anything my heart wishes about, and I am not allowed to complain as well. There are so many people starving all around the world I am unfortunately not able share my piece of bread with.

The restriction on food has been established by my own self in order to avoid gaining weight which is treated intensely negative by the people I interact every day.

“you look twice as big as me” -said my aunt when I was fourteen and weighed 105 pounds. This became one of the first reasons that made me consider restricting the eating habits.

I’m neither overweight nor obese, but I feel the gaze of society judging me for not being skinny. Am I superfluously overthinking? Probably. Am I being negatively affected by the beauty standards? Absolutely.

I consider this to be a cage with an open door which the bird can’t leave. The door is open, he is not locked there, he can fly away finally experiencing the freedom and a fresh breeze of air, he can be himself. But what if the bird forgot how to fly, what if he will be in danger out there. He must practice and gain control over his flying; he must learn step by step, occasionally coming back to his cage to take a break and think about his flying techniques and how to improve them.

Instead of being on constant strict diets, I can start eating healthy but delicious food letting myself to fly and experience the joy of freedom but come back and control it as much as I can. Even though that is going to be an extremely hard task for me to change my eating habits due to feeling guilty and anxious after every meal I take, will it be a healthy one or not, I feel the need to maintain my health and let my organism get energy to lead a normal life.

The bird is born with the ability to fly, he can fly and stop whenever and wherever he wants to, satisfying his needs and enjoying the moment. People, like the bird, must be free from the chains of powerlessness suppressing them by the cages they are locked in. We must practice the power we have fought for centuries; we should all experience inner peace and social justice. Change your life, choose alternate decisions to get out of the comfort zone and put efforts to open the door of the cage and we can fly away with confidence. We want our song of freedom to be heard everywhere.
