Research Design: In this part of the paper, use your previous analysis of the existing research in the field to develop your research design. You will re-identify a gap in the research you have reviewed (utilizing the feedback that I left you in the worksheet), explain how the research supports further exploration of that aspect of cognitive psychology, and develop a research question addressing the gap. You will then determine an appropriate research design and explain how it could be implemented, and how you will account for issues of ethics in your proposed research question.

The following critical elements must be addressed:

A. Using the feedback I provided to you in the worksheet, restate the gap you identified in the research that is unexplored or underdeveloped. For example, is there an unexplored aspect of your topic you believe could be further explored?

B. Using the feedback I provided to you in the worksheet, develop and provide a basic research question addressing the identified gap. In other words, create a question that you could answer in potential research further investigating your identified gap. Be sure to support your developed research question with examples from research to support your claims.

C. Determine an appropriate research design that addresses your research question regarding your topic and explain why this design was chosen and why it’s appropriate (e.g. correlational, observational, longitudinal, and so forth). Be sure to also explain how you envision implementing your research (number of subjects, the location where you might conduct your study, and what type of measures you might use to evaluate what you are studying).

D. Explain how you will ensure that your own proposed research design follows ethical guidelines. In other words, how will you ensure that issues of ethics associated with your proposed research have been managed appropriately? Be sure to utilize the APA ethics code and support your explanation with examples from the research you presented in your worksheet.

E. Explain how your approach to accounting for issues of ethics was informed and influenced by your review of the existing research in the field. In other words, what did you learn from the reviewed research in terms of how to address issues of ethics that you were able to incorporate in your own design?

Rubric

Running head: MEMORY OF ABUSE1Memory of abuse: the effects of traumaStudentNameCarlos Albizu University

MEMORY OF ABUSE2Memory of AbuseDisclosure to childhood trauma, particularly child abuse, has imperative consequences for the memory of experiences of emotional distress. These implications branch from the cerebral, socio-emotional, perceptual and neurobiological aftereffects of damage and can be explained to the effects of childhood trauma at least in part by present theories.Literature ReviewIn Cecere’s (1996) review of memory and abuse, among the important differences the author stresses, are the findings that traumatic memory often begins during a dissociated state, is usually invalidated by the criminal, and is infrequently labeled as traumatized by the person experiencing it. Frequently these memories are formed in an unconscious, involuntary manner, and exist as somato-sensory memories which are later evoked by various triggers.Further clinical research indicates that in victims with documented records of violence, delayed reminiscences and “traumatic forgetfulness” are common. Citing the results of several studies, Dr. Whitfield concludes that memories of abuse had remained postponed in abused subjects as “16 to 64 percent”. He recognizes that more clinical research is needed in the matter of disturbing retentions and discusses the challenges of implementing the scientific method in this region.Goodman et.al (2017) conducteda surveythatevaluated the links between psychological counseling and the accuracy of long-term memory for child sexual maltreatment. The citation says that therapy may help maintain accurate recollection to the extent that it increases children’s chances to rehearse their memories and reach a larger apprehension and more coherent narrative of events; provides a supportive setting, within which children can think and verbalize about their experiences; and reduces psychopathology symptoms that otherwise may inhibit accurate recall. This study provides evidence that psychological counseling received by child victims of

MEMORY OF ABUSE3sexual abuse during or shortly after prosecution may improve posterior memory of abuse-related information. The researchers (2017) employed a prospective longitudinal design with retrospective studies intended after at least some respondents had previously encountered relevant events; with information gathered and retrospectively examined for potential exposures in the defined cohort (where the same participants are observed over a point of time). The University Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved the study. In addition, for scientific and ethical reasons, participants were not informed that the study concerned child sexual abuse or memory.Gordon’s(1998) study discusses the surfacing of suppressed reminiscences and resulting accusations of sexual abuse in adolescence in the context of the therapists ‘ proven admissibility of the expert testimony offered. The paper focuses on the science effectiveness of memory retrieval methods and the evidentiary admissibility of such improved memories through extrapolation. The article states that in many cases the process of psychotherapy (i.e., scientific methodology) can add itself to a highly charged situation in which suggestible patients are unintentionally caused to implant false memories. Usually ingrained and defiant to efficient cross-examination, these false memories.McNally’s et.al (2006) researchexplores clinical characteristics of adults reporting repressed, recovered, or unceasing reminiscences of infantile sexual exploitation. The researchershave performed studies testing hypotheses about cognitive mechanisms implicated in an individual’s proclivity to forget and then recollect his or her child sexual mistreatment or to develop mendacious recollections of child sexual mistreatment. The researchers ascertained that members of the repressed recollection group, despite not having any recollections of abuse, embraced the label of abuse survivor. The partakers of the study responded to a newspaper
