Assessment: Learning Plan 5 –ListeningObjective:
This assessment will require you to log your listening techniquesfor part of your day. In addition, it will require you to watch a video and summarize the message of the speaker, and you will analyze how people respond to that video. You can complete this in an oral or visualform.
Step 1: Keep a “listeninglog”for part of your day. Note times when you feel like you exhibited competent listeningbehaviors and note times when listening became challenging. Identify the various environments that you were in and if the context impacted your ability to listen. Analyze the log based onwhat you have learned in Section 5.3. Which positive listening skills helped you listen? What strategies could you apply to your listening challenges to improve your listening competence?Identify at least one ambiguousstatement that you heard and clarify what that was.
Step 2: Watch “Me Too is a Movement, Not a Moment”by Tarana Burke.I understandthat we all have varying views on this topic; however, the goal of listening is to understand her message.
1.As you listen to the TedTalk, utilize a variety of listening techniques to understand her message. Iwant you to listen both her verbal and nonverbal communication. After you watch thevideo, I would like you to explain how the nonverbal messages impact the verbal message. In other words, what were her nonverbal messages saying?
2.Summarize the importance of her message and purpose. When you start your summary, you want to introduce it. Your summary will start: In the TedTalk“Me Too is a Movement, not a Moment, Tarana Burke explains____________.”
3.Paraphrase one central idea from the speech. Remember,a paraphrase includes a hesitancy phrase like “It seems like…, or I think…., or What I am hearing….”Then, include an emotion statement. Finally, include what she said in your own words. The, seek clarification; “is that correct?”It could be something like, “It seems like she is saying that she is frustrated that…Am I right?”
4.Finally, I would likeyou to read a few of the comments. Identify one comment that interests you. a.Identify what the listening technique the commenter used. b.Use a listening technique and reply to that one comment. In order to join the conversation, you will need to click on “comments/join the conversation.”You will need to create an account if you do not have one. Once you have added your conversation, you can take a screen shot of it and paste it to your assignment sheet.
