How wireless hotspots affect businesses

Background

Wireless hotspots are access points that allow users to connect to a Wi-Fi network using phones, computers, tablets, etc. In the present-day world, consumers have become tech-savvy, and many services have moved from physical dealings to online. With the emergence of brands or services that allow people to shop, pay bills, interact with friends, learn, and even conduct virtual meetings, internet connections have become vital and almost a basic need. In addition, companies have embraced remote working, which means that as long as one has access to some internet connection, they will go about their business without any glitches. This poses a huge threat to physical service providers such as diners and restaurants as they face the risk of reduced human traffic, which translates to low revenues in the long run. The availability of hotspots has enabled the offices’ concept, as many of them currently utilize hotspots for connection. It also gives reason for people to visit dinners, restaurants and malls for change of environment as the can still do their business from there.

Objectives

This research looks into assessing the effects of wireless hotspots on business. It focuses on analyzing how businesses utilize hotspots either to run everyday business processes like in offices or how hotspots are driving human traffic at physical business premises. The output of this research will help make recommendations on whether businesses should invest in wireless hotspots. It will help demystify the relationship between internet connectivity availability at a business premise and revenue earned.

Literature review

In the past, research has been done on the evolution of the internet and how it has affected businesses as time goes by. Apăvăloaie 956, in the paper “The Impact of the Internet on the Business Environment,” describes the evolution of internet and how it has affected business. However, they did not explore various ways of providing connectivity, and the financial implication of different methods, e.g., the use of ethernet versus wireless hotspots, thus the need for this research.

Methodology

To fulfill this research’s requirements, we’ll need to collect data (responses) from business owners who will provide an analogy of how the business has changed with the introduction of hotspots. We’ll also want to get input from customers who access the hotspots and connect to do various things like learning, shopping, or simply for entertainment. Respondents will be expected to provide their input by responding to targeted questions posed to them online, through the issuance of physical questionnaires, or one-on-one through interviews. The questions will be open-ended to give freedom for detailed responses. Respondents will be selected randomly at dinners, restaurants, offices, malls, etc.

Responses will be keyed into an analysis document and grouped either as qualitative or quantitative. Quantitative responses will form a basis for statistical analysis that will be done and represented in tables, graphs, and scatter plots drawn to facilitate understanding of responses and communication. The output will be a publication that will be available to the public as a reference point of information.
