Microsoft Power BI Data Analytics Assignment

In the “Through the Lens of an IS Manager” assignments, I asked you to think about what your fictional business would have on their operational spreadsheet to know if they are doing well or not.

Imagine having to look at a spreadsheet to see how you are doing day to day (this does not sound like a good or effective use of time). Staring at a complicated spreadsheet is not the same as looking at interactive graphs and numbers – the brain has an easier time detecting patterns, trends, and outliers this way. Thankfully, there are tools that exist that help transform the sea of rows and columns in a spreadsheet or database into something that is more digestible.

On that note, it is now your chance to create an interactive visual (not a spreadsheet) that helps a fictional business make decisions regarding their operation using Microsoft Power BI (Links to an external site.).

Learning Objectives

• 5– Apply knowledge of major types of software and their use in business settings. (CLO1, CLO7)
• 9– Develop an executive information system dashboard in Microsoft Power BI with an integration with ARC GIS – a geographic information system. (CLO6)

Assignment Instructions

1. Download the “SuperStore Sales Data(Links to an external site.)” Excel spreadsheet.
2. Download the “Bulky Waste Pickup Orders by Customer Account(Links to an external site.)” Excel spreadsheet. (Note: data is sourced from https://gis-mdc.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/bulky-waste-pickup-orders-by-customer-account (Links to an external site.) and has been cleaned and formatted for easy import into Power BI) – Miami-Dade County bulky waste data is available as part of public record.

   Important notice: the numbers for the Bulky Waste data set will NOT match 100% with the numbers from my video. I made an edit to the data set after as I realized I made an error calculating the “IS_LATE” column.

3. Navigate to https://app.powerbi.com/(Links to an external site.) and sign in with your FIU Student Email.
4. Watch the following video for a step by step guide on how to create an interactive report in Microsoft Power BI using the supplied “SuperStore Sales Data(Links to an external site.)” and “Bulky Waste Pickup Orders by Customer Account” Excel spreadsheets from above. – Step by Step Guide Video. (Links to an external site.)
5. Create the reports from the step by step video.
6. Using the SuperStore Sales Data, identify two unique insights to share with a fictional executive that works at the “SuperStore” (100-200 words per insight) and include screenshots of your insights.
   • Example –  From January 1st, 2015 – June 30th, 2015, for the central region, sales of furniture products have been most profitable in Minnesota, despite Texas leading in sales. Of the furniture products being sold, the “Riverside Palais Royal Lawyers Bookcase, Royale Cherry Finish”, has been the most profitable with all sales of this product coming from Minnesota.

7. Using the “Bulky Waste Pickup Orders by Customer Account” report, provide a brief overview of what questions could be answered with the available data (100-200 words). To aid with being able to answer these questions, please read the following to understand the business process:

Solid Waste Business Process

• Bulky waste pickup services are provided by Miami-Dade county to residents (see image above of what that service looks like).
• On an annual basis, residents can request two bulky waste pickups of up to 25 cubic yards each or one combined pick-up of 50 cubic yards.
• If the bulky waste pile exceeds 25 cubic yards, the customer can choose to combine the two pickups allotted for the year or pay $25 per cubic yard for the excess yardage.
• Customers can request bulky waste service by calling 311 or scheduling a pickup online at https://www.miamidade.gov/311direct/#/bulky/address(Links to an external site.).
• Bulky waste piles will be picked up within 8 days from the date indicated for pickup.

What to include in your submission?

A Microsoft Word document (not Pages from Mac) that includes the following:

1. Screenshots of your completed reports from the tutorial video.
2. Your two unique insights + screenshots of those two insights (100 words).
3. A brief overview of what questions could be answered with the available data for Bulky Waste Pickup Orders by Customer Account (100 words).

Evaluation Criteria

You will receive credit based on the percent of the assignment that is completed for the 3 parts that are listed above. Each part is equally weighted.
