How do Descartes and Hume differ most fundamentally regarding the origin of the idea of myself?

Explanation of Task:

This is a paper about how the “I” or the self is known. Hence, this paper has an epistemological theme.
Where does this idea of the “I” (that is, of the self) come from, if indeed there is such an idea of the self at all? The rationalist (Descartes) and the empiricist (Hume) have radically different ways of answering this. What is that fundamental difference?
Thesis
You will, of course, identify a number of important differences between the two epistemological theories, rationalism and empiricism. Your thesis concerns the most important of these. The argument of your paper provides the reasons why this difference you’ve identified is the most important of the other significant differences you examine.
Organization
This paper has a comparative element, of course: rationalism versus empiricism. The comparative part of this paper should be structured carefully. When identifying the basic differences, these should be selected and organized in the paper in such a way to highlight the most important important difference between the two theories.
Evidence
Your primary text for this paper is Melchert.
Bear in mind, that we have read from Descartes’ Meditations, which is included in Melchert’s text. And though we didn’t read from Hume’s Treatise, there are significant passages from that work which Melchert cites. Hence, the distinction between primary source and secondary source still applies
Examples of quoting from primary source within Melchert
“When I distinguish the wax from its external forms – when I ‘undress’ it and view it ‘naked’ there may still be errors in my judgments about it, but I couldn’t possibly grasp the wax in this way without a human mind” (René Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, quoted in Melchert, 155).
“When we entertain, therefore, any suspicion, that a philosophical term is employed without any meaning or idea (as is but too frequent), we need but enquire, from what impression is that supposed idea derived? (David Hume, HU 99, quoted in Melchert, 193)
Be judicious with your use of evidence from the text. Use textual source to support the positions you, yourself, are making. That is to say, use the text to support what you are saying, not to say what you need to say.
