What is science? How do we conduct science?  What is the Theory? Hypothesis? Fact?

Five of the questions below will appear exactly as they are printed here on your final exam.  You will need to write complete answers that are both in-depth but broad enough to answer the question fully.  Use pictures, diagrams or explanations to help you answer each question if necessary. Each question represents, in my opinion, the most general ideas presented in class this semester.

  1. What is science? How do we conduct science?  What is the Theory? Hypothesis? Fact?
  2. How do we define biological evolution?  What is the evidence for evolution?  explain each line of evidence we have that evolution is both a fact and a theory.
  3. How do we define biological evolution? what are the different ways microevolution occurs? What is Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium? Explain each way microevolution occurs.
  4. What is Macroevolution? How are new species formed? What are the different processes of speciation?
  5. How do we construct phylogenies? What are the rules for construction of a phylogeny? What are homologous vs. analogous traits.
  6. What are seedless plants? What traits distinguish them from other plants? Draw and describe a generalized life cycle of plants and a life cycle of a typical seedless plant (e.g. moss or fern)?
  7. What are seed plants? What traits distinguish them from other plants?  Draw a describe a life cycle of a typical seed plant (angiosperm or gymnosperm).
  8. What are some of the theories involving the origins of life? How do we distinguish prokaryotes from other groups of organisms?
  9. What are the major structures and functions of plants involved in water transportation? How are these adaptations for living on dry land?
  10. How do plants move water and photosynthate through their tissues? What tissues/cells are used in moving water and sap through the body of the plant?
  11. What are animals? What are the traits we use to distinguish amongst different groups of animals? What are the major groups of invertebrates? Be able to draw a phylogeny of the major groups of invertebrates.
  12. What are chordates? What are the traits that make chordates a monophyletic group? What are the major groups of chordates and the traits that make each group unique?  Be sure you can draw a phylogeny of the major groups of chordates.
  13. What are populations? How do populations behave (‘model’) under different conditions and why?
  14. What are ecological communities? What are some of the major functions that structure communities (e.g. pairwise interactions like competition) and the effects they have?  What are some major trends in diversity of communities?
  15. What is the theory of global warming? What does it predict and how do we know that it is a fact and a theory?  What are implications-consequences of climate change and what do we do about it?
