QUESTION: To what extent has each era in U.S. history transformed the role of government and American expectations about government? 1. Reflect on the assignment. Think of your essay as consisting of three sections. Each section should analyze one of the three transitions between the time periods that designated in the charts. If it helps, you can think of each section as a “compare and contrast” analysis of the two time periods in that transition.

2. Complete your time-period summary charts for each era. Fill in evidence and ideas that you did not have time to do in class. You will need lots of specific evidence from course sources ( specific details) and general statements that explain the evidence.

3. Then use the time-period summary charts to fill in the two-page final overview chart.

4. Use the overview chart to figure out your thesis. Make sure that your thesis directly answers the question and provides your “reasons why” behind that thesis. Because you will be addressing three transitions, your thesis in this essay should be relatively long—five sentences. By writing one sentence per transition, you will have space to summarize your main reasons for why you see (or don’t see) a major transition between each set of two time periods. Because your essay’s thesis statement will be long, it is important that you do not waste space earlier in the introduction. Get to your main ideas quickly.

5. Outline your essay.

Here are two possible ways to organize:

•Introduction: State thesis: yes/no and your reasons why—for each of thetransitions.

•A1. Evidence that doesn’t prove your thesis for this part of the essay; explain why not

a. Evidence for one of the categories

b. Evidence for another category
