In 1993, a feudal war broke out between the Tutsis and Hutu ethnic groups in Rwanda.
More than 800,000 men, women and children were brutally raped, tortured, and murdered by militant Hutu’s. Most were killed simply because of their ethnicity or for trying to halt the violence.
In the aftermath, many argued that the U.S. and other powerful nations should have done something to stop the genocide.
Others argued that while the genocide was sickening because of its brutality, the U.S. had no business risking the lives of American soldiers because;
(1) the conflict was a civil war and a big mess, and
(2) the United States had nothing to gain militarily, politically, or economically by getting involved.
My question for you this week is twofold:
Should the US use its military to mitigate some of the horrible brutality that takes place in the world?
According UNICEF: Approximately 15,000 children die from mal-nourishment related clauses EVERY DAY! Do we have an obligation to help prevent this?
Why are we quick to intervene militarily in countries like Libya, Iraq, and Syria but not in Rwanda, South Sudan, or Darfur?
