In the Apology, Socrates argues that we should not fear death. In the Phaedo, Socrates explains that philosophy prepares us to die by turning away from the body. Comparing these two arguments, explain why philosophy and death are related. Can accepting one’s death allow one to examine life?

In 3 – 4 pages (double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman) defend an original argument with a thesis statement that is supported by careful analysis of one the assigned readings. Your paper must address a concept, argument, distinction, or issue from one of the assigned readings by Plato in detail and depth. Remember to cite the text (paraphrase a specific passage, provide relevant quotations, and give the page number in parentheses). If you do not cite the text, your paper does not have textual evidence and does not fulfill the assignment.

You can write about bell hooks’s “Critical Thinking” or Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost, as long as your paper also addresses one of the readings by Plato and has a philosophical thesis. Your paper needs to demonstrate that you understand what you read, can explain ideas fully, and have your own original thoughts about these arguments. You are allowed to edit and expand on one of your discussion board posts or reflection essays, as long as it clearly supports your thesis statement.
