Option 3: Language in Social and Cultural Settings

Your first assignment will focus on your experiences with language and culture. If you choose this option you will write about an experience you had with language in a variety or specific social or cultural settings. Below are some examples, but there could be more. It’s up to you.

You have experienced discrimination simply because of how you spoke (an accent, regional dialect, etc.).
Perhaps your language or a language you learned is gendered (male and female have different words). How did that shape your perspective of people and things or relationships?
How does language reflect your gender or sexual identity? Have you experienced or know someone who experienced difficulties in being recognized on expressing themselves?
Have you noticed an impact that public language (media, politics, social media) has on how people treat each other?

What you submit:

Length: 1.5 -2 pages at Arial 10, that’s between 800- 1200 words if you use a different font. Type this out in a word/google doc beforehand and then copy and paste.

Content: In your writing you provide a summary/ description of the circumstances of the situation you chose and use explicit examples of speech/ dialects. slang. patters or vocabulary used and reactions/ behaviors involved.
