Occupation prestige

As you know from class discussion, assignment #4 asks you to match an occupational prestige ranking score to each of the occupations in your 2 lists from assignment #3, i.e., the inter- and intra-generational lists for the occupations of family members. While I encourage you to search “occupational prestige ranking” to check out what’s available, the following link for results from the General Social Survey, which is conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the Univ. of Chicago, has the advantage of including an extensive listing of occupations, though you will find more recent data presented on other sites:

After collecting these scores, you can analyze your family’s experience(s) with social mobility, e.g., upward or downward vertical mobility (and/or both) as well as horizontal mobility, much as you did for assignment #3. Does your conclusion using survey data match the conclusion you reported in the earlier assignment?

Compare the assessments of vertical and/or horizontal mobility that you made at the end of assignment#3 ((Living the Dream) to the results garnered from your analysis using survey data, i.e., are they similar, different, or both?
