Storm by Tori Murden Mcclure

Topic 1A:
TMM’s generosity toward and helping of other people.
How can we see these qualities in TMM? Use at least two major concrete examples.
(Don’t merely repeat material from your essays.)

Topic 1B:
The American Pearl: the boat itself –what are the key facts about the boat that we should remember from the building to the final landing? How does the American Pearl, the boat itself, play a role in what happens on the voyages? Focus on the most important aspects, but also be sure to demonstrate a comprehensive sense of the boat’s career.

Topic 1C:
Equipment failures and other major difficulties on Voyage 1?
What were the problems with crucial equipment, how did these problems matter for TMM, and how did she deal with those problems? Also, what other major difficulties arose on the first voyage? And how did TMM deal with those difficulties? (Perhaps this topic is too large, so select the most important items to use while responding to this topic.)

Topic 1D:
Lamar: who he is and how he matters to TMM.
His place in the book and his place in her life, both in childhood and in adulthood.

That’s for the first part

second part: I expect to get at least five to six full paragraphs as your deep, developed response. Use an introduction, develop your material in body paragraphs, and include a helpful conclusion. Use details for illustration and support. Explain what you mean.

Essays should use 12-point font, be double-spaced, have 1-inch margins, and meet standard formatting, including your name, our class, and a good title on page 1.

You may and should use your book for this exam.
I expect you to complete the work without help from anyone else.
This exam is NOT a research project, and online sources should NOT be used; the only exception would be online dictionaries.

For Part 2, I am expecting you to show knowledge across the book as a whole.

I expect you to provide at least five-to-six full paragraphs for your deep, developed response. Use an introduction, develop your material in body paragraphs, and include a conclusion, if you have time. Use details for illustration and support. Explain what you mean. Make sure I will understand that you have a deep understanding of your topic across the breadth of the book, as appropriate.

Directions: You will write on ONE topic from these four choices.

2A: TMM’s Educational Journey

Show me the key stages in TMM’s education as we get it in A Pearl in the Storm from childhood to adulthood. A lot of this education is academic, but some of that education is emotional and even spiritual. Guide me through the different types of education and the different stages or steps in TMM’s development.

2B: Voyage 1 vs. Voyage 2.

Write an essay on the key differences and the key similarities of the two voyages. Obviously one was unsuccessful and the other successful, but there’s a lot that can be said to show me the significant aspects of both voyages. Be sure to also address how TMM herself is the same and/or different during the two voyages. (Has her motivation changed or not, for example?)

2C: Physical and Psychological Demands of TMM’s Voyages.

What of the psychological demands faced by Tori Murden McClure in her two trips across the Atlantic Ocean? And, how are these trips hard on her mind and her emotions? How do the physical hardships and other factors matter for Tori’s mental and emotional states? Are the psychological demands different on the different trips?

2D: Helplessness

Tori Murden McClure’s battle against helplessness is an important part of this book.

Write an essay that guides us through Tori’s lifelong history with this daunting enemy.

Help me to see the important moments or stages of her struggle against helplessness.
