Students will view two full-length classical music performances on YouTube of their choosing and write a two-page, double-spaced paper for each concert. Include a program listing for each concert in your paper. Describe the setting, general environment (lighting/staging) of concert only as necessary. The report focus must be on the music and performance. At least one paragraph per performed work. (Length of paragraphs may vary depending on program.) Comparison and contrast (discussing similarities and differences) may be used. You should include: o basic performing medium, o general genre (symphony, quartet, concerto, etc.), o outstanding musical features of the work (tempo, rhythm, meter, melodic characteristics, textures, instrumentation, etc.), o quality of the performance and any special or interesting performance characteristics. 7. Use descriptive language to summarize observations of the music (e.g., “lilting melody,” “pounding rhythm,” “soaring melodic line.”). o Student should attempt to describe how a composer or performer achieves a particular affect or emotional effect. Use newly learned musical vocabulary carefully. Second report should demonstrate higher level of sophistication of vocabulary usage. o Papers should reflect the music in performance rather than information about the composer or the historical background of the music. o Students should include personal (emotional and intellectual) reactions to the performances and, as individual sophistication allows, should be supported by musical specifics. o Observations should be of a holistic nature supported by specific observations.Page 7 of 10 8. It is helpful to listen to the music more than one time. 9. Avoid first person in all formal writing. (Use “this author,” “this critic,” or “this observer” in your concert reports.) 10. All papers should be typed in Times New Roman 12 or Courier 10 with one-inch margins on all sides 11. Any citations must follow Turabian (Chicago style) or MLA format.
