They were founded in 1987 in retaliation to the government’s lack of action, and at times complete refusal, to end the epidemic. ACT UP relentlessly advocated for research to be done on the virus and drugs to be produced to cure it. While ACT UP made a great deal of social and political progress through their activism in the 80s, many of the issues they advocated for are unfortunately still prevalent today. Specifically, the coronavirus pandemic has made it especially apparent that universal healthcare is a necessity and has confronted us with the brutal reality of the FDA’s extortionate drug prices which disproportionately affects the poor population and people of color.
