Filmmaker Case Study

Description

1.  PROJECT DESCRIPTION This assignment asks you to analyze the career trajectory of the filmmaker of your choice in order to determine—to whatever extent possible—how that filmmaker achieved the position s/he currently holds inside (or outside) the industry.  In other words: How did Filmmaker X turn the success (or, perhaps, the failure) of her first film—whether that “film” was a feature, a short, a commercial, a music video, a YouTube video, or something ever farther afield—into the project/projects with which she is currently involved.    2.  PARAMETERS + EXPECTATIONS Your case study should answer each of the following questions. Bullet-point responses are fine, although some questions require longer/more detailed explanations than others. If your research does not provide a clear/explicit answer, do your best to speculate based on our discussions in class.  What was the ROI on your filmmaker’s first film / screen-based project? (And remember, an ROI is not necessarily monetary.)  What was the budget?  Where did the money come from? Why might those specific people / companies have invested in this particular film / filmmaker? What were the box office returns? What kind of life (if any) did the film have after its initial run in theatres? Did the film win any awards? Did it garner any critical praise—and if so, did that acclaim help the film / filmmaker? In what ways did the film lead to the filmmaker’s second (and/or third, and/or most recent) film? The answer almost certainly involves more than one way—list / analyze / account for as many as possible. Additional Notes: You must utilize and list at least three (3) sources. Do not cut and paste blocks of information from IMDb (or a similar website)—the goal is to analyze the information in order to better understand how the filmmaker got to position s/he currently holds.   3.  DELIVERABLES Your analysis is due by CLASS 11. Please submit a .pdf to Canvas before the start of class.   4.  GRADING RUBRIC 1. Quality / Clarity / Depth of Analysis — 5 points 2. Spelling and Gramma — 5 points
