As we recently marked the one year anniversary of the first coronavirus case in Canada, we can all agree that the covid-19 pandemic has caused us to alter our usual way of life in long-lasting and difficult ways. Province-wide lockdowns have been recurring as we are battling a third wave. Restaurants, malls, exercise facilities and small businesses (to name a few) have been forced to close multiple times in an effort to minimize exposure. Society has reacted to these mandatory lockdowns in many different ways; some feel it is appropriate to close as many of these businesses as possible to protect public safety, but others are more conscious of the broader concerns of collapsing businesses on the economy and Ontario families who own, operate and work within them. In the midst of this, “big box” stores have been allowed to remain open because they provide “necessities” to the population. However, some large businesses (Walmart, Amazon, etc.) have capitalized on this opportunity to sell more than they ever have before. In a persuasive essay (containing the features described above) argue whether or not Ontario should enforce mandatory lockdowns. Include in your answer which, if any, businesses, institutions, facilities, and schools should close and explain why (in order to persuade the reader).
