Please use the summary-analysis essay template to ensure APA style compliance:
Students write an essay which summarizes and analyzes an article’s content and the author’s perspective. The essay summarizes the main points (what the article says) and then analyzes the author’s effectiveness (strengths and weaknesses) in presenting the argument (how the author conveys the message). Students are assessed on their ability to write cohesive paragraphs; a thesis statement that is fully supported throughout the essay; an introduction; and a conclusion free of punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors. Students write in their own words, objectively without bias, and support their statements with reliable evidence.
The essay consists of:
1) a four- to five-page essay,
2) a title page, and
3) a reference page.
The essay must cite at least three credible and relevant sources. The essay must be formatted in APA, including a title page, page headers, subheadings, one-inch page margins, and be double-spaced using Times New Roman 12-point font. Students select their own topic or one from a list provided by the instructor.
TIPS
-
Before: Follow the attached template and example and refer to the Blackboard rubric as guides before you start writing. At least one source must be from the CityU Library databases. This gives you valuable practice using the databases and applying Four Moves & a Habit framework.
-
During: Submitting your paper to SafeAssign, the Global Reference Database, will protect your intellectual property from future plagiarism at CityU and other institutions that use SafeAssign by ensuring that you are given credit for your original work. Check the box next to “I agree to submit my paper(s) to the Global Reference Database.”
-
. Receiving a SafeAssign report may take minutes up to several hours depending on the volume of submissions. Use the report to make your paper better and resubmit.
Summary-analysis Essay Structure and Minimum Requirements
The following structure, as described in Module 8, ensures required components of the essay are addressed.
-
Introduction. Introduce the article, including the author(s), publication date, and thesis statement.
-
Summary. Summarize what the article is about;
-
Evaluation or Analysis. Analyze how well the writer conveyed the message. This type of critique or analysis is called rhetorical analysis. A rhetorical analysis might identify the writer’s use of analytic tools such as appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) and any flaws in logic (logical fallacies).
-
Response. Do you agree or disagree with the author(s)? Recommend strategies the author could have used to improve the essay. Consider if the article could be used in academic research (was the Four Moves & a Habit framework applied?). Remember to write in third person–this can help your essay from appearing biased.
-
Conclusion. Recap the essay, including restating the thesis, but do NOT introduce any new information that has not already been presented.
