“Writing is Hard: A Preface “ , by Amy Poehler

Description

Text: (select one)

As we begin to examine the elements of evidence and style in our assigned texts, the focus of this paper will either be on how authors use evidenceor how authors use their own particular writing style to convey their ideas to their intended audiences and achieve their purpose in writing.

For this assignment, you will write an analysis of either the author’s evidence use or the author’s writing style of one of our first two texts.

In order to add context to the rhetorical situation of your chosen author’s text, you will need to first include information about them, their approach to writing, and writing experiences in a brief introductory paragraph. This part may require a bit of research online. Remember to keep track of your findings as you will need to include in-text citations for any quotes or specific pieces of information in your paper and then cite your sources on your Works Cited page. Your introduction must include a thesis statement which establishes your paper’s focus (evidence use or writing style) and makes your argument clear for your reader.

[Note: You may not know your argument when you begin your draft (and that’s okay!), so be ready to revise and adjust your thesis statement once you’ve finished your analysis and determined your answer!]

Next, if you are doing an evidence use analysis: you will need to address how your chosen author uses evidence to present their ideas to their original intended audience. What type of evidence does the author use? Do they use references to other figures in their field, historical events, personal anecdotes, or other types of evidence to develop their claim for their audience? Does the author’s use of evidence create a compelling argument for their readers? How do their choices, in the type(s) of evidence they use, affect their audience?

Next, if you are doing a writing style analysis: you will need to address how your chosen author uses their particular writing style to present their ideas to their original intended audience. What type of language does the author use? Do they rely on any descriptive or metaphorical language to build a picture for their audience? Does the author’s tone create a specific mood for their readers? What is the mood created by the author? What effect do their choices have on their audience?

Finally, you will need to develop a conclusion about the overall effectiveness of the author’s evidence use OR author’s writing style in their specific text.

If you are doing an evidence use analysis, how effective is the author’s evidence use in building a text which resonates with and convinces their audience? You should conclude your analysis based on your determination of whether the author’s evidence use fits the rhetorical situation, successfully reaches their intended audience, and achieves their purpose for writing.
