Final Examination

Description

Format: Please do not include the instructions in your answers.  You will write one essay and four short answer Identifications.

Essay (100 points):

Word Count: Roughly 600-900 words.

Sources: Please cite your sources in parenthesis (author, title, and page number if available).

Works Cited Page: Please include one at the end of the essay.

Grading Rubric: Please see the rubric in the Final Exam Module.

History as a discipline is a cumulative practice in which historians often build upon and challenge each other’s work as well as common myths.  The framing of new questions, the discovery of new evidence, and the pressing interests of the historian’s own time – these are but a few of many possible examples –contribute to this revisionist streak.  With this in mind, write a short essay in which you explore an example (or examples) of the revisionism that can be found in the materials for this course.

Reading sources: 3 of them provided, but not all needed for this essay

Identifications (12.5 points each = 50 points total):

Word Count: Roughly 75-100 words for each ID.

Choose any four of the Identifications that you have written in this course and do the following:

Peace of Augsburg, 1555

Defenestration of Prague

Christian IV

Gustavus Adolphus

Cardinal Richelieu

A) Briefly identify the term;

B) Explain its historical importance; and

C) Explain how it illustrates one of the following historical concepts: Complexity, Causation, Contingency, Context, Continuity, Change, Agency, and Structure.

You can use each of the historical concepts one time (for example, you cannot use complexity twice); in addition, you should note that you will write four ID answers, yet there are seven different historical concepts, which means that you do not have to use all of the historical concepts.

Writing Tips:

  • History took place in the past hence we normally use the past tense when narrating events.
  • Craft a good title for the essay, as well as a strong thesis statement.
  • Each paragraph should support the thesis statement, while the introduction should let the reader know what the essay is about, and the conclusion should tie everything together and perhaps point to new areas of inquiry.
  • Good essays are grounded in evidence, exhibit independent thought, and are well-argued.
  • Leave plenty of time to edit; even the best historians edit papers numerous times.

Other Tip:

  • I have posted some readings that might be useful for your essay in the Final’s Module, as well as video lectures. Please be aware that you do not need to use these materials but rather are free to use any materials from the course when writing the essay.
