Focus on segregation and economics in the industrial North. When the people making the Great Migration reached their destinations, how was the deck stacked against them in terms of work, housing, and access to public goods? What were the contours of Northern segregation, what limitations did it impose on the identities of Black people, and how did they respond and keep moving forward? Focus on a particular city or region. The outh Side of Chicago, Detroit, East St. Louis–each of these places saw the rise of a new Black social order under constraints. Tell that story about a specific place and its response to the Great Migration.
