For this reason, Writing Assignment 1 will be a short comparison paper based on a few reading assignments: Kahneman (2011), McGonigal (2012), and Gray (1990). That is, your assignment is to compare the ideas articulated in the assigned writings of at least two of these scientists, using appropriate paraphrasing, in-text citations, and NO quotes. The assigned readings are either easy to read book chapters or a more complicated (but still easy to understand) theoretical review paper about large concepts that are central to the study of self-regulation. They are not research-based, empirical papers like the one you will be writing, but they are a good introduction to self-regulation as an important area of scientific exploration. As you read these words, think about how each of the scientists defines self-regulation and how they approach it in the same way or differently. For example, you can talk about willpower, the behavioral inhibition system, and/or System 1 and System 2; that is, you can briefly describe each scientist’s views regarding the ways that we control and manage our own behavior, and discuss how they are the same or different. The page requirement for this first paper is minimal…2-3 pages, with a separate APA-style References page. The point of the first writing assignment is to let me know that you: A. read the papers and have a bit of a foundation regarding the importance of, and the many ways to think about and study, self-regulation; and B. can use appropriate paraphrasing, in-text citations, and references; before we even get started on the Introduction section of your 15-page, APA-style, empirical research paper. Kahneman (2011) and McGonigal (2012) are book chapters, and Gray (1990) is a theoretically focused review article. (I apologize for the scanned versions of the Kahneman and McGonigal chapters…my secretary scanned them years ago, and some of the pages are rotated, the copyright page is omitted, etc.; but they are still more readable from a screen than any of the pdfs that I can find online.)
You will also need to do some reading in your APA manual and the Marek chapter on scientific writing, (posted under Writing Resources) as your guide for how to how to use paraphrasing and in-text citations in different ways. The Marek chapter is very reader-friendly, and she gives really good examples of paraphrasing vs. plagiarism and in-text citations on pages 10 and 11. APA-style scientific writing is all about paraphrase…which is the point of the no quotations element of Writing Assignment 1. Many of you are probably used to MLA-based writing, and, therefore, you want to quote frequently. We don’t quote much, in psychology…we paraphrase when we talk about someone else’s ideas. You will need to use each of the different in-text citation sentence structures outlined by Marek in your comparison paper, going back and forth between references within the same paragraph. The sample papers provided in the APA manual and the Marek chapter are also good ways to see different examples of appropriate in-text citation structuring.
