A Linguistic Turning Point in the English Language

Purpose of the Project

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate a linguistic turning point in English that has caused or greatly impacted a key change to the English language.

Step One: Project Proposal

In Step One, you will present the proposal for your presentation. The proposal should demonstrate the underlying historical or social/cultural elements related to slang (in general or from a particular period in time). It should also justify why the chosen turning point has changed (or is changing) the direction of the English language. You will also identify which tool you will use to develop the final product (PowerPoint presentation).

To help you develop the proposal, consider the following questions about linguistic turning points in the English language:

• What are linguistic turning points?
• What are the major historical periods in the history of English?
• What have the major changes been to the English Language over the years?
• What are cultural changes related to language?
• What are social changes related to language?

The exploration chart below may help you to explore your topic and to direct further research. Explanation on how this tool can be used to develop your written response is provided below.

Topic:

Deliverable for Step One: Project Proposal. Write a four-paragraph summary, to include the following information:

• The opening paragraph should present the underlying historical or social/cultural elements related to slang (in general or from a particular period in time). Construct a thesis that identifies the chosen turning point, outlines the argument, and presents the supporting points.  (This is the “I see” portion of the exploration chart.)
• In no more than two paragraphs, summarize the turning point to demonstrate how it is truly a major turning point related to the project’s primary subject of how the turning point changed (or is changing) the direction of the English language. (This is the “I think” portion of the exploration chart.)
• In one paragraph, present an overview of the project’s upcoming research plan, i.e., what the next steps are in completing in the project, including what research is initially needed.  (This is the “I wonder” portion of the exploration chart.)
• In one paragraph, discuss the tool you will use to present the final project or what steps you are taking to choose your tool. (PowerPoint Presentation)

Using first-person in this summary is acceptable. The submission should be formatted in MLA 8^th edition style and be carefully edited and proofed for standard use of English.
