3. Sometimes, the students with disabilities in your classroom will need specific SEL instruction and supports. These SEL needs may be very different from what their peers without disabilities require. As a teacher, you need to provide this SEL instruction and support to your students with disabilities when needed, but you also need to do it in a way that is inclusive and does not isolate, embarrass, or segregate them. Imagine the following scenario… you have a student with a disability in your room who struggles with sharing and will frequently take things from others. This student’s IEP addresses this problem and states that they should be provided with SEL instruction and supports on how to share and not take things from others without permission. What are some inclusive ways you can provide this SEL instruction and support to this student with a disability? Is there a way you can teach this to the whole class without singling out and/or embarrassing this student? Is there a way you can incorporate this into other types of general, all-class instruction like reading? How can you support/reinforce those lessons and new behaviors to involve everyone, without focusing on or segregating the student with a disability?
