Paper Layout and What to Turn In

    1. Within your chosen topic, how have social media communities been built, sustained, or managed by our networked system?
    2. Include at least five course related concepts from course material (like big data, digital ethics etc…). Define social. Define communities. Define social media. Include a theory from the book (critical/social/tech determinism for example) and how that theory is supported or not supported by your topic/thesis. Be critical – discuss the potential for harm (and define it) within your topic.
    3. Use the lectures, readings, films, and book materials to backup arguments made in class.
    4. APA Style – pay attention to in-text citations – films have to have special citation as well asarticles, book, etc… Please don’t use “I” in these papers. Only 10% of your citations can be news/blog articles (but if you don’t use any, that is fine as well). Fuchs is required as well to be cited at least once. Remember, you need back-up and citations for the statements you make. You cannot assume a fact is a fact, that trolls are on Twitter and can impact elections etc…thus it is ok to have more than 15 citations, but at minimum 15 citations.
    5. Make sure your topic is not too broad – connect to class material. For instance, don’t just talk about digital labor – talk about an aspect of it within the realm of the course and social media communities.
    6. Organization: Introduction, Body, Conclusion. Have sections for different topics within the body of the paper. Thesis statement needs to be specific and in the introduction section of your paper. Take a stance, defend an argument. Since this is a combination of a research

paper and a literature review, you can go from argumentative/problem solving to statement based:

The current trend in treatment for congestive heart failure combines surgery and medicine. More and more cultural studies scholars are accepting popular media as a subject worthy of academic consideration.

Schools should provide educational resources for low-income students during the summers so that they don’t forget what they’ve learned throughout the school year.

The rise in populism on the 2016 political stage was in reaction to increasing globalization, the decline of manufacturing jobs, and the Syrian refugee crisis.

Libraries are essential resources for communities and should be funded more heavily by local municipalities.

With more and more teens using smartphones and social media, cyber bullying is on the rise. Cyber bullying puts a lot of stress on many teens, and can cause depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Parents should limit the usage of smart phones, monitor their children’s online activity, and report any cyber bullying to school officials in order to combat this problem.

  1. References: APA style reference page and in-text citations. I need at least 4 academic journals, and the rest can be books, .edu, .gov, or reputable nonprofit sources. You can use more than 15 sources, and might with 8-10 pages. Be careful with ordinary websites or .coms/.orgs. You need to remember that you are doing an overview of existing research on your topic.
  2. Focus: Just like a term paper, a literature review is organized around ideas, not just sources. Use themes to support a thesis statement.
