  • The first ten books are done and will need to be combined into the PowerPoint with the next 30 books.
  • Preservice teacher/candidate will develop a 40 book classroom library that includes the following:
    • organizational method
    • titles
    • author(s)
    • genre(s)  [The variety of genres should include fictional genres (poetry, fantasy, historical fiction, traditional literature, realistic fiction) and non-fiction genres (poetry, biography, autobiography, informational texts, memoirs, etc.) as well as print and digital texts.]
    • selection criteria
    • summaries
    • ideas for use with teaching  metacognition strategies to all students, including ELLs
    •  literary terminology (e.g. simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, etc.),
    • a variety of effective reading strategies to support all learners
    • multi-cultural connections, with research to support ELLs in reading
    •  connections between reading and writing.
    • multi-sensory instructional strategies.
    • evidence of how to support instruction in the following areas:
      • oral language development,
      • phonological processing,
      • phonemic awareness,
      • phonics instruction,
      • fluency,
      • comprehension,
      • vocabulary,
      • morphology, and
      • written expression.

The library must address how books may support ELLs, and those with learning differences, dyslexia, learning disabilities, social/emotional learning needs. 

The 40 books will include:

  • A minimum of 10 novels; 2 will be literature discussion books used in class.
  • One text set of 5-10 books related to a social studies concept for content area integration. (Example provided.) Details provided on Canvas. (Example provided.)
  • At least 15 books with specific literacy terminology development such as similes, metaphors, personification, etc. Examples from the texts must be included.
  • At least 15 books with detailed suggestions, including multi-sensory strategies, for inclusion of effective metacognitive reading strategies such as prediction, visualizing, summarizing, determining importance, as well as comprehension skills such as compare/contrast, main idea/detail, characterization, and sequencing.
  • A minimum of 15 multicultural books, including how they may be used to increase students’ second language acquisition, and cultural connections.
