Rewrite this: In elementary school for my math class we would do addition and subtraction every day. I had to be able to do simple math in order to move on to the next level. I had to make sense of problems and solve them. In my English class we would work on reading. I would have to read out loud. The standard I had to reach here was being able to interpret words and phrases in the texts I was reading. In science we would build. The standard I was meant to meet was to use tools and materials to design.

In middle school math we were doing more complex things like algebra and more multiplication. The standard was to figure out problems and see how to make sense of these new numbers. In English we had to read harder passages and still meet the standard of understanding different dialect and phrases. In science we had to design working things almost like little machines. The standard I had to meet here was being able to build something complex, test it, and then modify it.
High school became a lot easier to meet standards. For math we did pre-calculus and algebra 2 although understanding them was a little difficult we still had to make sense of it to move on to the next grade. English stayed the same from middle school up we read different genres of things, but the standard remained the same. Science was more for fun than it was to meet a standard we only needed to take science for one year and then we could either continue with it or stop.

Go to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards website ( Read the information on the page that tells you about the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. Then, for EACH of the three standards you chose, do the following:

  1. Give a quick description of the class and the standard you were required to meet.
  2. Using the hyperlinks at the bottom of the page, select the appropriate content area. Read the information provided about standards

    in this content area. Then click the hyperlink at the bottom that takes you to the specific standards in that content area.

  3. Open the standards document for the appropriate grade level. Search through the document (use your search function to look for

    keywords) to find the state standards that match the standard you described.

  4. Document your findings. Were you able to find your work reflected in the state standards? If so, how? If not, speculate on why.
