Characterization: Identify and analyze how the portrait salesmen are developed directly or indirectly in “The Portrait.” Be sure — in a clear topic sentence — to establish your focus (on either direct or indirect means). Support your claims with textual evidence. You are expected to write one lengthy, well-developed paragraph.

Tone: Identify the tone of the opening paragraph in “When We arrive” and provide textual evidence to support this. Then, using a block quote, focus specifically on the interior monologue of one migrant worker. The paragraph of close reading analysis that follows the block quote should provide evidence of a continuation of the opening tone or evidence of a tonal shift.
