Originality and its Nemesis (Deadline Wednesday, June 9th, 10:00 a.m)

Formatting: 4-5 pages, 12500-1500 Words double spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman font
Where does the idea of “originality” come from historically and how does it relate to other concepts such as
individualism, genius, and authenticity? How is originality challenged by the following phenomena: reproduction, kitsch, and fashion? Answer these questions in an essay in which you cite the texts by at least (3) different authors, engaging with their perspectives. The following is a list of recommended authors: Jon Berger’s “Ways of Seeing”, Mary Staniszewski’s “Believing is Seeing”, Roland Barthes’s “The Language of Fashion”, Aleksa Celebnovic’s “Notes of traditional kitsch”, Vivian Li’s “Original Imitations for Sale: Dafen an Artistic Commodification”, and Elizabeth Wilson’s “Adorned in Dreams”.
A successful essay will:
-Accurately interpret the ideas of the chosen authors and connect them effectively to the issue of originality
-Show commonalities and differences between authors if there are any.
Extra Credit is to answer this question.
According to Anne Freidberg, what pre-cinematic apparatuses contributed to making the flaneur’s mobility “imaginary mobilities” for an actually immobile spectator? How did these apparatuses do so? Cite from her chapter, “The Mobilized and Virtual Gaze.” to support that point
