This paper analyses the success of “mundane vehicle simulator”, in particular Euro Truck Simulator 2 by exploring and extending the gameplay performance, player experience, and the role of player in the overall work through an game interpretation, post-structural analysis approach, simulationist analysis approach with the component of ontology study.
Game introduction:
Euro Truck Simulator 2 as the second video game in the mundane truck simulator series was developed and published by Czech developer SCS Software in 2012. As one of the 2016 Steam Awards Winners which included the “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award and the “Sit Back and Relax” Award (), the Euro Truck Simulator 2 does not invite itself to be appreciated as a traditional vehicle simulation game. Based on Olli Tapio Leino’s performance analysis of Euro Truck Simulator 2, there is no score, or any evident ‘goal’ against which players’ actions could be evaluated(). Without the ranking list at the end of each game session, no “winners or losers” will be determined when comparing the Euro Truck Simulator 2 with other examples of online mundane vehicle simulation games such as eSport (). A large success honored by a truck simulation video game might seem like an anomaly since a satisfying driving physics, vast and atmospheric maps, and a peaceful and stress-free way of playing are not the only factors to attract and retain the great level of popularity. This paper argues whether the success of Euro Truck Simulator 2 is mainly depending on the high-level of game production with a particular focus audience group.
