Students…Urban sprawl isn’t just important to humans and our interactions, but is also of significant impact to habitats that are eliminated/paved over and the non-human organisms, both plants and animals, that live in them. A primary point of this discussion is to address what you think about this and whether or not this is beneficial to these organisms and biodiversity, in addition to the directions below.

It is very important, given the extinction rates that are approximately 1000 times normal background rates, largely due to habitat loss, for humans to always think about the impacts of our actions on other species. From an anthropocentric viewpoint, we depend totally on the biodiversity that surrounds us. Wiping out habitats can destroy entire trophic levels, even entire ecosystems, and cause cascading effects that ultimately impact our human quality of life.

Impacts of Urban Sprawl

Read through chapter 13 that starts on page 335. Review the paragraphs that discuss “Sprawl,” which are between pages 339 and 342. The textbook mentions that it will not debate whether sprawl is good or bad for a community, however it then goes on to list the various types of negative impacts it has on such a community.

  • Do you live in a sprawling community? How about a community that is decreasing in size or staying the same? How has it impacted the native flora and fauna of your area? Have the types of organisms stayed essentially the same or have they changed, for example has there been an influx of invasive or more human-tolerant species? Has the growth or regression been beneficial or detrimental to you and your fellow community?  Why?
