In your first paragraph, fully summarize the podcast: Rap on Trial: How an aspiring musician’s words led to prison time. Second, be sure to answer one or more of the questions below.  The questions are

  1. After investigating, police found thousands of music lyrics, there was no evidence Oduwole was a violent person, interviews with people on campus agreed he was not a threatening person, but the prosecution disagreed.  Why?  Explain by applying concepts from this semester.
  2. 2 different stories: 1) a potential terrorist who was plotting a campus massacre; and 2) a young man who has unlawfully stored a gun on campus, but otherwise has done little wrong.  It’s up to a jury to decide. Note the racial and age demographic make-up of the jury in Oduwole’s case and use your own words to explain how conviction was thus highly likely.
  3. The sociological component is that Oduwole’s experience is not an isolated one as rap lyrics have been used as evidence of criminal intent against black men. Summarize the criminological research that indicates how rap lyrics have the potential to bias jurors. In such instances, can the accused get a fair trial when the jury is clueless to social context? Explain the above while keeping in mind that perceptions and biases are rooted in the social construction of reality
