HEALTH POLICY RESEARCH PAPER PART II: CRITICAL ANALYSIS & SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGE: In Part II of this assignment, students will write a critical analysis of the policy they have discussed in Part I. Students will indicate its effectiveness in meeting its desired outcome, gaps or weaknesses in the policy, and suggestions for change. Specifically, Part II will include the following: Title Page: Please include a title page with the title you used in Part I (unless you were advised to revise it), your name and student number, and due date. Introduction: Provide an introduction in which you present a condensed version of the description and background that you completed for Part I. This should include the most important points about the policy’s development, its purpose, etc. The length of your introduction should be approximately 250 words. Critical analysis & Suggestions for Change: This is the core of your paper. Using scholarly literature, analyze the policy and provide suggestions towards its improvement. As you do so, consider the following questions: Does the policy address the issue it is meant to address? Does it meet the needs of the population it is meant to serve? What effect has it had on people’s access to healthcare in Canada and / or to population health outcomes? What are some of its unintended consequences? Are there Page 6 of 19 people who are hurt by this policy? etc. Drawing from the scholarly (i.e. peer-reviewed) or grey (i.e. from government documents or reports, think tanks, etc.) literature, indicate critiques (positive and negative) that have already been directed at the policy. If possible, try to incorporate references that both support and counter the policy, etc. In addition, being as specific as possible, identify ways in which the policy can be improved to better meet its intended goals (i.e. to better increase access to healthcare for its intended population; or result in better population health outcomes; or protect vulnerable members of society, etc.). Students are encouraged to include examples of other jurisdictions where alternate or revised policy has been successfully implemented (for example, in Europe, the UK, the US, etc). Students must identify specific ways in which these changes can be introduced. This section of your paper should be between 750- 1000 words, 1250 words maximum. Note: It is essential to be specific and provide examples in this assignment. Stating ‘the government should do something’ is not an adequate suggestion for improvement. Conclusion: Write a brief conclusion to summarize your main points. Reference List: provide a complete reference for any sources used, in proper APA format. Length: Your Health Policy Assignment, Part II should be between approximately 1250 – 1500 words, maximum 1750 words, Times New Roman 12 font, double-spaced.
