In presenting your informative speech, you must adhere to the following instructions:
Speech content: The informative speech must be 7 minutes long (+ or – 30 seconds). Student must cite a minimum of 4 credible sources in the speech. The speech should be organized appropriately with a clear introduction, main points, and conclusion. Words should be chosen effectively to clarify and illustrate the ideas presented.
Speech recording: The speech should be filmed in front of a live audience who have committed to listening to the speech and giving their feedback to the speaker. At least 5 adults must be present to hear your speech. The recording will begin and end with a view of the audience to verify their participation in the entire speech. The recording itself must be seamless. If it is edited in any way to eliminate potential problems, it will be rejected resulting in a 0 for the assignment. If a smart phone is used, a wide not narrow field is recommended.
To record the speech, the student must have the following equipment:
A digital recording device such as a camera or smart phone. It must be able record both video and audio clearly. The file recorded must be able to be uploaded to the appropriate platform on Blackboard.
A tripod or secure way to stabilize the recording image. A tripod is suggested because it will allow the camera to move from side to side if the speaker chooses to move in the space.
A volunteer to record the presentation is recommended.
The speaking space: It is highly recommended that speeches be recorded in a space that is appropriate for public presentation. A classroom in a school or a meeting room in a church or community center is ideal. Because the speaker is expected to gesture and move during the speech, a home or a dorm room is not recommended because of the limitations of space for speaking as well as recording.
Speaking amenities. You may use a podium or a lectern where you can rest your speaking notes as long as the speaker can be clearly seen above the waist. VISUAL AIDS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR THE INFORMATIVE SPEECH. YOU CANNOT USE POWERPOINT OR ANY OTHER PROJECTED VISUAL AID FOR THE INFORMATIVE SPEECH.
Speaking prompts. A speech is never read. Students are only allowed 3 small note cards or a single piece of paper to serve as memory prompts while speaking. If the cards or piece of paper have so many words that you are tempted to read, then they are not appropriate. Reduce the words so that you can focus on the audience and not your notes.
Technical difficulties. Any technical problems that prevent the speech from being viewed and heard on-line are the responsibility of the student to resolve. If the recording cannot be seen or heard with ease, it will not be accepted. It is therefore highly recommended that you take time to rehearse with your equipment well before the due date of the assignment to avoid serious consequences.
Submitting your video file. VoiceThread has been added to this unit. Your informative speech file should be submitted to VoiceThread by the date/time indicated by the Instructor. For assistance in uploading your file, please review the instructions.
Submitting audience feedback. Before you begin to record your speech, make sure that each person who has consented to listen to your speech and give feedback has a copy of the audience evaluation form and something to write with. When your speech has been completed, give them as much time as they need to answer the questions about your speech. You may want to leave the room so that they feel more comfortable both affirming and constructive comments. Once everyone has completed the forms, scan them as PDF documents and submit them on Blackboard through the assignment link. (Failure to submit the feedback forms will result in a deduction of points from your informative speech).
