Select an advertisement from a magazine, newspaper, or television. Using information gained from your analysis of the advertisement AND from relevant course materials to help support your analysis, answer the following questions:
1. BESIDES the slenderness of the models, what specific part(s) of this advertisement drew your attention (i.e. the use of color, the copy (written information such as slogan), etc.)?
2. Does the advertisement draw on any cultural myths or stereotypes about gender? About race? About class? About sexuality? In what ways does the ad (and the media) depict the racial/sexual/gendered “other”? Are these representations accurate? Why or why not?
3. To whom is this advertisement addressed (what kind of person does it assume the reader to be? What kinds of beliefs, values and assumptions must you hold in order for this advertisement to “make sense”?) What specific parts of the advertisement tell you this?
4. To whom does this advertisement NOT speak? What specific parts of the advertisement tell you this?
5. What is the “message” (or messages) this advertisement conveys? (For example, what does it tell you about what it means to be a woman/man or of a particular race? What does it say about sexuality? How does it suggest we should look? Act? What messages about happiness and success does it convey?) List the specific parts of the ad that convey this message.
Remember to include a copy (via link or jpeg file) of the advertisment that you are analyzing with your assignment when you turn it in.
