Data Management Information System Design and Implementation Proposal Report

Now that you have a better understanding of what types of information systems a business may use for its daily operations and to support its customers, you will select an enterprise or organization (real or fictitious) of your choosing to determine which data management information systems can best support it. By then end of this class, the goal is to prepare a comprehensive proposal for the design and implementation of an information system that can support data management.

In this first Individual Project (IP), you will describe your selected organization’s issues related to data management, such as using sales to forecast future production needs. You will also set up the report outline so that you can add to it each week. The combined weekly IP assignments will be your final Key Assignment deliverable.

You will be working on many parts of the proposal throughout each week that will lead you to complete the final proposal report. Each week, you will receive IP assignment information and a deliverable for each IP.

Project Selection

First, you must choose a company or enterprise (can be hypothetical) along with a product(s) that fits the following criteria:

• Nontrivial: The enterprise or organization utilizes or has the potential to utilize information systems.
• Domain knowledge: You will apply concepts you learned in Unit 1 for BADA200.

Select a company and product that fit these requirements, and submit your proposal to your instructor before proceeding further with the assignments in the course. What you choose will be used for all of the assignments each week.

Assignment Details **PART ONE**

Your first task in this process will be to select a project to use as the basis of your design. You will be using a document template each week to meet each deliverable requirement.  This will be a working document. As you proceed through each project phase, you will add content to each section of the working template.  For your final deliverable, this template will be turned in as your completed Key Assignment Final Draft.

The project deliverables are as follows:

1. Submit project proposal to instructor for approval
2. Review and save the working document template. Each week, you will be adding information to specific sections based on the bolded section headings and deliverable requirements.  You can find this template here.
   • Using Microsoft Word, type in the following on the template title page:
     • Name and course information
     • Name of project
     • Your name
     • Date of project submission
3. Add the following information to the corresponding sections in the working template (this will be your first deliverable):
   • Company Background

1. 1. • Give a description of the company. This is a narrative on the company or organization’s background, what it does, and the company’s mission. This should be 2-3 paragraphs.

1. 1. • Create a table that has 4 sections: Issue, Impact, Business Operations Impacted, and Suggested Improvement.
      • Fill in the table so that it is 1–2 pages long; at least 8 issues related to data management must be identified.
      • The table should look like the following:

For this week’s contribution to the overall Key Assignment, you will build a list of candidate information systems and the applications they support that could solve the organizational issues identified in your Unit 1 IP. The new content should go in the Suggested Information Systems and Applications They Support section of the Key Assignment template.

Assignment Guidelines **PART TWO**

• Add the following new content to your working template:
  • Part Two: Suggested Information Systems and Applications They Support
    • Using the chart below as a guide, build a list of at least 5 candidate information systems, and describe the applications they support to solve the organizational issues identified in your Unit 1 IP(part one).
    • For each information system, include what it takes to operate and maintain it.
    • Mention which potential business strategic objectives each system could support.
    • Discuss the pros and cons for each system.
  • Make sure the document is in APA format.

For this week’s contribution to the overall Key Assignment, you will build a list of candidate information systems and the applications they support that could solve the organizational issues identified in the Unit 1 IP(Part one) The new content should go in the Suggested Information Systems and Applications They Support section of your Key Assignment template.

Assignment Guidelines **PART THREE**

1. Add the following new content to your working template:
   • Part 3: Implementation of New Information System and Business Strategic Alignment Proposal
     1. Select 1 information system for your selected company, and explain why this system was selected.
     2. Describe the system and how it best aligns with your company’s business strategic goals and objectives.
   • Part  3: Selected Information System Capabilities Detail
     1. You can use research you shared in your primary response for your Discussion Board this week to describe the organization data.
     2. Develop an architecture diagram that represents the database and network configuration that you is incorporated in your selected information system.
     3. Include detailed information to go along with the database architecture diagram.
     4. Include detailed information on the applications, operations, and management of the selected information system (this should have already been outlined in the Unit 2 IP-PART 2).
2. Make sure your document is in APA format

For this week’s contribution to the overall IP, you will make sure you have content in Sections 1–5 that covers the concepts introduced in Parts 1–4. You will review the content to make sure it flows from one section to the next. The goal of this report is to be a proposal, so you should review and revise to make sure it is meeting this objective. Each section should be a 1–2-page written document. Your title page should indicate that this is a Draft.

• Review each of the following sections from your working template and make revisions per feedback:
  • Data Management System Design and Implementation Proposal Report
    • Section 1: Company Background
    • Section 2: Data Management Organizational Issues
    • Section 3: Suggested Information Systems and Applications They Support
    • Section 4: Implementation of New Information System and Strategic Alignment
    • Section 5: Selected Information System Capabilities Detail

** PART FIVE** Tasks (Objectives from Part 1–4):

In the previous 4 parts, you selected a nontrivial enterprise or organization for which to create, design, and build a recommendation proposal to implement 1 new IS related to the management of data and identified as addressing an organization issue that exists today.

You thoroughly researched and documented the following information as part of your Key Assignment toward the goal of preparing a comprehensive report for the design and implementation of an information system related to data management:

• Selected the company and described its background and mission
• Described the organizational issues related to data management
• Suggested information systems and the applications they support to solve organizational issues, with the pros and cons
• Wrote a proposal for implementation of a new information system with business strategic alignment
• Discussed the information system detail including supported applications, operations, and management

At this point, you should review and make changes to sections 1 through 5 of your Key Assignment based on feedback from the instructor and classmates during the draft review. Make sure it is a cohesive document transitioning from one section to the next with sufficient detail in proper APA format.

Part 2 Tasks (Objectives from Week 5): 

For the last section, you will add the following new information to the report or Final Key Assignment:

• Final Information System Proposal should contain the following:
  • Consideration for emerging technologies and trends as part of the proposed information system
  • Executive Summary highlighting all of the overall recommendations and where they are incorporated in the proposal.

Your Final Key Assignment, Data Management System Design and Implementation Proposal Report, should have all of the following sections filled in:

• Section 1: Company Background

• Section 4: Implementation of New Information System and Strategic Alignment

• Section 6: Emerging Technology Implications
• Section 7: Executive Overview
