13th (Links to an external site.): This examines the ways in which the 13th amendment, which prohibits slavery except when people have been convicted of a crime, functions as modern-day slavery in the United States. Please note that this film is intense (but so good), and includes lynching imagery as well as a brief rape scene from the movie 12 Years a Slave. If you feel like you can handle it, I recommend choosing this film–but you don’t have to. This is usually available only via Netflix, but they’ve made it available at the link above for free right now.

I Am Not Your Negro (Links to an external site.): This is a beautiful, artsier film based on the unfinished writing of James Baldwin about the lives and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This one is available for free through Kanopy if you have a Camden County library barcode or access through your local public library.
