Documentary Reflection Paper

Instructions

Choose ONE of the documentaries from the following list.
Take notes on the film as you watch, including things that surprise you, anger you, confuse you, or contradict things you’ve been taught in the past.
Write a 2 page reflective paper about what you learned, how you felt, and what you want to look deeper into from the film.
Do NOT just give me a summary that you could have easily found online. I want to hear your specific thoughts (even if you’re disagreeing with the film!).
Please cite the film you watch as well as any other sources you may use to write your paper!
List of films:
13th (Links to an external site.): This examines the ways in which the 13th amendment, which prohibits slavery except when people have been convicted of a crime, functions as modern-day slavery in the United States. Please note that this film is intense (but so good), and includes lynching imagery as well as a brief rape scene from the movie 12 Years a Slave. If you feel like you can handle it, I recommend choosing this film–but you don’t have to. This is usually available only via Netflix, but they’ve made it available at the link above for free right now.
I Am Not Your Negro (Links to an external site.): This is a beautiful, artsier film based on the unfinished writing of James Baldwin about the lives and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This one is available for free through Kanopy if you have a Camden County library barcode or access through your local public library. I think it’s on Amazon Prime as well if you have that. You may be able to find it elsewhere online if you don’t have access through Kanopy.
Race: The Power of an Illusion, Episode 3 (Links to an external site.): This one is also available through Kanopy and examines the social construction of race. Make sure to
