Are poverty, inequality, and economic development relevant to discussions about peace, and human rights? How is poverty related to violence and conflict? Are issues such as inequality and poverty properly conceived of as matters of human rights and social justice, or should countries focus primarily on civil and political rights?

• The essay must be driven by a clear thesis. 1 point
• Your essay must display sustained analysis and critical thought. 4 points
• Use theory (at least four of the readings in the syllabus to develop your answer- cannot repeat readings in future essays). You can not use a reading from the syllabus more than once. 5 points (1.33 per reading)
• Use evidence to support your main argument and assumptions, such as statistical evidence or dates and events.
  • Validate your position with authoritative references or primary source quotations (four sources). 4 points
• Incorporate one current event in your paper to support your position- providing detailed information (you can only use the current event once) 3 points
• Examine the strengths and weaknesses of your assessment. Make sure you discuss at the end of your paper at least two well-thought-out weaknesses in your argument in the conclusion of the paper. 3 points (1.5 per well-thought-out weakness)
